ISO material groups
Six groups, one colour each. Find your material, and you know which grade to ask for.

| P | Steel | EN8, EN19, EN24, MS, alloy steel | 150 – 300 m/min | Long chips. Choose the right chipbreaker. |
| M | Stainless steel | SS 304, 316, 17-4 PH, CF8M | 120 – 220 m/min | Work-hardening, built-up edge |
| K | Cast iron | Grey CI, SG iron, CGI | 150 – 300 m/min | Abrasion, interrupted cuts, scale |
| N | Non-ferrous | Aluminium, brass, copper | 300 – 1000+ m/min | Built-up edge. Use sharp or polished tools. |
| S | Superalloys & titanium | Ti Gr 5, Inconel, cobalt-chrome | 30 – 80 m/min | Heat at the edge, notch wear |
| H | Hardened materials | Hardened steel 45–65 HRC | 50 – 150 m/min | Edge chipping. Consider CBN. |
